In contemporary China, the realism upheld by Xu Beihong has had immense practical value. The first national "Xu Beihong Award" exhibition aims to see artists discover from amidst the tradition of Chinese art and vibrant social reality, and explore into the concepts, forms, styles and medium of Chinese art. Over 1100 artworks by over 600 artists participated in the award, and in March 2009 the panel of judges reached a final decision, and the exhibition will showcase over 160 selected works. Sun Guangyi is nominated for his two works 《天界－风中的经幡》. The exhibition will open on 19 April 2009, at the Xu Beihong Memorial Museum in Nanjing, China.
