SUN GUANGYI

An encounter, a joint art and fashion exhibition

March 18, 2004, HONG KONG – In October 2003, artist Sun Guangyi met with renowned multi-talented fashion and accessories designer Sin Sin through common friends in Beijing.  Sin Sin was deeply moved and attracted by Sun Guangyi’s spiritual and enlightening paintings which are influenced by his life experience, including the invitation by the Living Buddha to restore a temple school in Yunnan.

To Sin Sin’s and Sun Guangyi’s astonishment, they discovered during one of their first conversations that in September 2003, a month before their first encounter, they were both in Shangri-La of Yunnan province.  The landscape, the culture and the people had a great impact on both of them.  Back in Beijing and Hong Kong respectively, and unbeknown to each other, both Sun Guangyi and Sin Sin related their impressions of their journey by creating works of art and fashion.  Sin Sin’s recognition of this “coincidence” culminated in this unprecedented joint exhibition: “Awake”.  She aims at “Awaking” one’s appreciation of art through two seemingly different medium.

His being a devoted Buddhist influences Sun Guangyi’s enlightening and tranquil paintings.  His style is a contemporary expression of traditional Chinese calligraphy.  Sun Guangyi yearns to share the peacefulness, tranquility, mystery and solemness of nature with art lovers.  His art is an invitation to share and experience the hidden life force and spirituality in all phenomena in the universe.

Sin Sin possesses without doubt a unique versatile talent.  Her exuberant dynamic energy is most amazing.  Each experience and story gives her ideas for new creations.  The latest Spring/Summer 2004 fashion and accessories collection reflects and embodies her experience of Yunnan.  The sacred mountains, the richness of colors, as well as the down-to-earth locals... Each piece of clothing mirrors Sin Sin’s stories and her memories.  Sin Sin’s designs not only exude a unique artistic style, but go into the most minute details into their use of material, cut, etc…

Sin Sin also invited renowned photographer Loren Hammer from San Francisco to shoot her Spring/Summer collection.  She called upon 18 women from diverse backgrounds with distinct styles to model this collection.  Each of the models is Sin Sin’s supporter both in fashion and in life.  They include an image consultant, a yoga instructor, an ex-ballet dancer, a designer, etc...  The images harvested in Central over a week will be shown concurrently with the “Awake” exhibition opening on March 18 at 6:30 pm at Chouinard Gallery Hong Kong, G/F, 1 Prince’s Terrace, Mid-Levels, Hong Kong.
